What is Forensics? Forensics is ... An opportunity for student in grades-5-8 to participate in competitive public speaking. Students may choose from six categories: Declamation (speech) - reading a speech written and previously delivered by someone else. Drama-the reading of a script Extemporaneous - researching current topics, preparing for a few and performing on the one chosen by lottery at the competition Impromptu - speaking about a topic without a script. A 15-20 minute preparation period is given beforehand Multiple Reading - being a member of a 3-5 person team and reading a literary selection in the format of a radio broadcast Poetry - reading a poem or a selection of poems Prose - individual reading of a literary selection -Team members are chosen by audition. -Individual coaching sessions will rotate once a week during the student's lunch period or during 8 th period on Tuesdays or Thursdays. It is the student's responsibility to practice their pieces the majority of the time at home.-Meets are held on Saturday mornings at various SPFL (Southwestern Pennsylvania Forensic League) school locations throughout the South Hills. Possible locations for this year's meets are: Mary Queen of the Apostles, Mellon Middle School, South Fayette Middle School, Peters Township Middle School, St. Louise, and Canevin High School. Meets run approximately from 8:30 am -1 :30 pm. -Parents are responsible for getting their child to and from the meets. -The dates of this year's meets are November 7th, December 12th, and January 23rd. An "All-Star" meet will be scheduled for sometime in March. Only the top ten scoring team members are invited to compete in the All Star Meet. AUDTIONS WILL BE HELD ON THURSDAY, OCTOBER 1ST DURING LUNCH PERIOD IN THE LIBRARY -Any eligible student interested in auditioning for the team may come to the library during lunch period this Thursday, September 24, to register for a category and select their audition piece.
