Dear Parents,

The month of April begins with the most solemn days of the liturgical year as we commemorate the events of the Passion.  But, just like spring comes after the cold of winter, the week ends with the joy-filled celebration of the Risen Christ.  Alleluia!

CALENDAR:  School will be closed on Wednesday, April 4 and we will return on Tuesday, April 10.  There is an early dismissal on Friday, April 27.

IMPORTANT:  Because of the unused snow days, we will NOT have school on Tuesday, April 24, Election Day.  Also, looking ahead, the school year will end on Friday, June 1.  On that day, students will be dismissed at 11:30.

SACRAMENT PROGRAM:  There is a retreat for Confirmation candidates on Sunday, April 15, and a First Communion retreat for second graders on Friday, April 20.    On Sunday, April 29, we will celebrate the first of the three First Communions with the traditional group celebration.  The children whose will receive First Eucharist in the family celebrations will be the following two Sundays, May 6 and 13.  Please pray for our second graders as they prepare for this exciting event in their spiritual lives.

Students in grades 3 through 8 will celebrate Reconciliation in school on Monday, April 2,

LIVING STATIONS:  A number of our sixth through eighth graders have been working with Mrs. Grella to present the Living Stations to the parish on Monday, April 2.  The school students will have the opportunity to see these Stations that afternoon at 1:00 p.m.  The children will walk to church immediately following the lunch period and will be back in plenty of time for their dismissal.   As always when the plan is to go to the church, this is subject to change if the weather is not good.

TESTING:  Terra Nova tests will be administered throughout the school beginning on Monday, April 16.   For the first time, testing will also be done in kindergarten and grade 1.  PLEASE MAKE SURE YOUR CHILD IS WELL-RESTED AND COMES TO SCHOOL ON TIME DURING THE TESTING SESSION.   Make every effort to have your child in school during this period.  Unfortunately, if a child misses any of the test sessions, they will be made up and this is much more stressful for the child than the normal testing situation because he/she may need to take multiple tests on the same day.

SCIENCE DAYS:  We are once again fortunate enough to have the University of Pittsburgh Mobile Science Lab come to our school.  Students in grades 4 through 8 will participate in some scientific experiments under the direction of the university mentors.  You will see the huge trailer in our lot!!  Also, Miss B and Mrs. Herr are planning a series of in-house activities for all the grades to celebrate Earth Day.  One of our core belief statements is that we are steward of earth’s resources and this is a great opportunity to remind the students of ways we can accomplish that.

I hope you can join us for the Night at the Races on April 28th.  It’s a fun evening and all profits come directly to the school – which helps keep our tuition affordable!

REMINDER:  Final tuition payment for the school year is due May 10th.
The faculty and I extend our wishes that you have a blessed and Happy Easter.  Rejoice!  He is risen!  Alleluia!

God bless,

Mrs. J
